Suddenly One Summer by Julie James

Suddenly One Summer

Synopsis:

From the New York Times bestselling author of It Happened One Wedding comes a novel about a man and a woman whose summer is about to get very, very steamy…

Divorce lawyer Victoria Slade has seen enough unhappy endings to swear off marriage forever. That doesn't mean she's opposed to casual dating—just not with her cocky new neighbor, who is as gorgeous and tempting as he is off-limits. But once she agrees to take on his sister's case, she's as determined to win as ever—even if that means teaming up with Ford…

Investigative journalist Ford Dixon is bent on finding the man who got his sister pregnant and left her high and dry. He's willing to partner with Victoria, despite the fact that the beautiful brunette gets under his skin like no other woman. He might not be looking to settle down, but there's no denying the scorching attraction between them. Still, the more time he spends with Victoria, the more he realizes that the one woman as skeptical about love as he is might be the only woman he could really fall for…

Review:

Suddenly One Summer was a fun read. Ford and Victoria were so great together! I love their banter, I love the hate turned to grudging like turned to love story.

The story opens with Victoria's house being broken into which sends her into a panic attack and awakens memories she has tried not to think about. Since she no longer feels safe at her place she buys a new one. Only it won't be available until the end of the summer. So she leases a place, coincidentally next to Ford, for the summer.

Ford is such a sweet guy. He is fiercely protective of those he cares for and would do anything for them. He brings a girl home the first night that Victoria is staying in her leased place, and when Victoria sees him with some other girl the next day out on the balcony she is sure he is a player (even though he definitely is not). She is positive he not someone she wants anything to do with, so when they meet she is not very nice to him. That starts the amazing banter between them. Victoria thinks he is a jerk, he thinks she rude, it was so much fun.

Ford's sister, Nicole, has a child but doesn't know who the father is, but needs to find him to try and get some support. When Victoria, who is a divorce lawyer and used to dealing with custody cases, volunteers her services free of charge things really get good. Ford and Victoria have to work together to try and track down the baby's dad. Their surveillance work was just so much fun! Of course their hate for each other turns into grudging respect which turns into a sex only relationship.

Neither Victoria nor Ford want anything serious. Victoria has some panic issues which make her unable to take the subway or be calm in enclosed spaces. She doesn't want anyone to know, she doesn't want to be out of control ever, so she tries to hide it. She really needs to always project this strong, together, tough woman. Ford has his own issues to deal with, but they are perfect for each other. Ford really is the sweetest guy. All the little things show how much he cares. It was a little rough getting to the happy ending since they both have things to work through, but together they can work through it. A great read.
