The Duchess War by Courtney Milan

The Duchess War (The Brothers Sinister Book 1)

Synopsis:

Sometimes love is an accident.

This time, it’s a strategy.

Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly--so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don't get trampled. So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention.

But that is precisely what she gets.

Because Robert Blaisdell, the Duke of Clermont, is not fooled. When Minnie figures out what he's up to, he realizes there is more to than her spectacles and her quiet ways. And he's determined to lay her every secret bare before she can discover his. But this time, one shy miss may prove to be more than his match...

Review:

The Duchess War was so much fun to read! It is a great old timey romance with a little bit of heat and a whole lot of amusement on my part. I have read a few in the past that just didn't have the same type of feel as a romance written a long time ago and I didn't enjoy them as much. This had a lot of elements of the true older romances with a more modern twist that still was within the realm of what I love so much about stories like this. I can't get over how much fun this book was. I was reading the whole thing, and even now writing this, with a huge smile on my face. Loved it!

Minnie has secrets. She hasn't been able to live her true life for a while now. She has been hiding and tries her hardest to not have people notice her. She is super smart and crafty, but she tries to be happy being this docile girl who will do whatever and just blend into the shadows. She needs a husband and if anyone ever finds out her secrets she will be ruined.

Robert is the Duke of Clermont, though he doesn't really act like it. When Minnie first meets him they are both hiding, and Robert is intrigued. He finds Minnie and how she tries to be so subdued when she really isn't very interesting. He loves seeing her riled up and he is just drawn to her. He was so cute. He fully acknowledges that when Minnie is around all the blood leaved his brain and he just cannot think straight. He is not the best with words and it was hilarious. His point of view was just...I loved it. So cute.

Minnie likes Robert as well, though she can't let herself hope for anything to happen with him. It is not realistic for her. I mean he is a Duke! She cannot dream to aim so high. When someone starts asking questions of her past, questions raised because of something Minnie believes Robert was responsible for, she tries to blackmail him. Only problem? He doesn't really care or play along like he should. Instead he tells her he will flirt with her and let people see he is interested while she tries to prove he is responsible for what she thinks he is. It is war, and Minnie is better at the tactical stuff than Robert, but man it is fun watching them along the way. Robert does not always know what to say, or say the right thing, in front of Minnie as she kind of drives him crazy and he really likes her. Minnie tries to fight her attraction to Robert and oh I just loved it. The back and forth, the strategy, everything. It was so much fun! Minnie vs Robert - who will win? Can they both get what they want and live happily ever after? Such a great read. I cannot wait to read more by this author!
