Kiss Me (Fool's Gold #17) by Susan Mallery

Kiss Me (Fool's Gold series)

Synopsis:

New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery creates the small-town destination for romance in charming Fool's Gold, California—where a loner cowboy finds the one woman who can capture his heart...

After Phoebe Kitzke's kind heart gets her suspended from her job in LA, she swears off doing favors—until her best friend begs for help on the family ranch in Fool's Gold. Unfortunately, sexy cowboy Zane Nicholson isn't exactly thrilled by the city girl's arrival.

Thanks to his brother's latest scheme, Zane has been roped into taking tourists on a cattle drive. What Phoebe knows about ranching wouldn't fill his hat, but her laughter is so captivating that even his animals fall for her. One slip of his legendary control leads to a passionate kiss, but she's exactly the kind of woman a single-minded loner needs to avoid.

In his arms, Phoebe discovers she's a country girl at heart. Yet no matter how much the small town feels like home, she can't stay unless Zane loves her, too…but is this cowboy interested in forever?

Review:

I loved Kiss Me. A quirky girl who talks to animals and a big, tough, silent loner guy who is so sweet? Sign me up.

Phoebe is one of those people who just has the biggest heart. This is not always a good thing since in her need to help others she sometimes catches the fall back from those favors others asked of her. It wouldn't be so bad if people didn't take advantage of her kind, caring nature. When she gets suspended from the job she loves because of one of these favors she decides that is it! No more favors! Only that doesn't last long. She is just to kind and sweet.

Zane is a loner. He is all hot and sexy, but he doesn't talk much, especially to women. He has his ranch and his brother he is trying to take care of. He has regrets, things that eat at him, and he doesn't want that for his brother. His brother messes up and Zane is hard on him to try and save him from that regret. It is kind of sweet how much he cares, but he doesn't really know how to show that. He struggles with how to be a brother and a father. I really liked Zane.

When Zane needs help with a sudden cattle drive for tourists Phoebe's best friend (Zane's half sister) enlists her help. Phoebe arrives a few days before her friend and woah the sparks fly. Something about Zane just draw Phoebe in and vice versa. They were so cute together.

Really I just loved both of them. Phoebe is not afraid to just be herself. She talks to eveything. She talks to her horse while riding, her friendly bull whom she tells everything to and whom asks for advice (not that he gives it), just anything. She was adorable. I loved her so much. The way she thinks about things is great and she is quite witty. Really she and Zane both are. He is quiet, but funny and they have a great back and forth between them.

"'I'm sorry,' he whispered, pressing his cheek against her hair. 'I'm such a jackass.'...
'Jackass seems strong,' she murmured.
'How about a first-class screwup?'
'If you're going to do a job, then do it the best you can.'"

Really I first noticed how much I loved the way Phoebe thought about things when she was describing being kissed by Zane. That whole scene, their first kiss, was amazing. It was such a different way of thinking of the situation, but amazing at the same time. I just loved reading what she was thinking because it was so much fun and so different from most people.

At first Zane doesn't really know what to do with this girl whom he is attracted to, but they end up working things out. I loved how he was this big, tough guy yet he didn't really know the best way to go about showing Phoebe he cares. He was so cute!

My only real complaint is that the ending felt a bit rushed. Everything just suddenly happens, but it was so great I didn't mind that much. Really I  just wanted to spend more time with these characters. They were just so much fun! Phoebe sees Zane for the amazing guy he is, sees how he longs to have that close relationship with his siblings but is not sure how, is kind of jealous of what they have together. She sees how hard he tries to do the right thing and she was wonderful. Zane gives Phoebe that stability and family inclusiveness she has always wanted. Even though at first it doesn't seem like it should, they just work. They are perfect for each other and I loved reading their story.
