Better When He's Brave is the third book in the Welcome to the Point Series. I love this series. It is gritty and dark and the characters are not all good (or all bad). It is not like most books I have read. The main characters don't start off bad then meet the love of their life and suddenly change into good guys. They are still who they are, only a little more careful maybe. They will never be all good, never be all on the up and up, but they are wonderful people. I was looking forward to Titus' story since he is the cop and kind of black and white with things, and he didn't let me down. This story was really an amazing read.
Titus is a cop, but a cop who cares about what happens to the people of the Point. He knows that not everyone has good options. Sometimes good people do bad things because they have to and those are the people he wants to help. The ones that are good, like Bax, but have to do what is necessary sometimes. Titus grew up in the Point, got out when he was young but still carries this darkness inside of him from everything he did to survive. The Point is a dark place and I am sure it would eat me alive if I were to step foot there, but it is so much fun to read. I love that intensity, that having to make hard decisions and reading about these people's lives. Titus does talk about love in the Point and how it is different to love other places which I really enjoyed. How people in the Point just have it harder. Everything is a struggle.
"Regular people got to love with ease and without thought. People that fell in love in the Point had to do so knowing it was a battle to stay in love."
Reeve we met in the first book in the series. She was Dovie's friend who sold her out at the end. She had hired a bad bad guy to killer her sister's killer and he had called in his favor. She feels terrible about it, but it happened. Now she is once again in trouble and the only person she can trust is Titus. She was never supposed to return, but Titus is a good man, a man who does what is right, a man who need to know what she knows about his city. He is not like the one she so recently thought she loved. Reeve wanted someone to keep her safe, keep her protected so she doesn't have to be afraid all the time, and knew Titus would never be that guy so she sought out another. Only she didn't pick a very good replacement.
When Reeve shows up telling Titus who the bad guy is, who is responsible for the murders and destruction recently, he is not too happy. He has to keep Reeve safe to try and take the bad guy down. After all the bad guy wants to burn the Point to the ground. He wants to destroy everything Titus loves and he really is evil. He is just a devious, awesome villain. He seems to think of everything and is a bit unhinged so he doesn't care about much. He wanted Reeve and he is not happy that she picked Titus over him so that just makes him that much crazier. Oh he was fun. Some of the things he does, things he makes people do, were just genius in a horrible way.
So Titus and Reeve have to work together to try and take down the villain. Through all that Titus finally lets his darkness off the lease he keeps it on. He finally admits that he likes Reeve, cares about her and always has. They were perfect for each other. She can take whatever he give and she accepts him for who he is. She knows he has hard decisions to make at time, but knows he is trying to make things better. She loves him for who he is and doesn't want him to ever change. She wants him to stay the good cop. She doesn't want to drag him down, she wants to be better for him. She doesn't have it easy since a lot of people, including Titus' brother Bax, really don't want anything to do with her for what she did to Dovie. But she cannot just let the Point be destroyed when she can help. She can start trying to make up for her past bad decisions.
Titus is also great with Reeve. He is there for her when she needs some strength, some kindness, some of whatever she needs. He just is so amazing! Loved him! He tries to save everyone. He carries a lot on his shoulders, but it is just who he is. Loved them both together.
This book was intense to read at times because of what happens. There were scenes when I was just like no!!! No this cannot be happening! What is going on?!? But that is the Point. It is not a nice happy place and it never will be. It lets me experience some of that seedy, dangerous underground that I have never experienced in real life. I love it so much.
One more note on Reeve. At the beginning you have this great scene with the bad guy and Titus. The bad guy is saying how he could have given Reeve everything.
"'She chose wrong. I could have laid this city at her feet.'
'If she wanted the city at her feet, she would have put it there herself.'"
So right from the beginning I was excited to see how fierce she would be. I was ready for this tough, no holds bar lady who wouldn't take anything from anyone. That is not really what Reeve is though. By the end I just thought she wouldn't be able to take the bad guy down on her own, even with revenge as a motivation. She is pretty insecure and kind of fragile throughout the whole book (though she could be strong with Titus and for him) and just not at all what I expected. I liked her, I enjoyed her story, but she is not the tough girl I was thinking she would be. I definitely don't see her burning the city to the ground if something were to happen to those she loves. She just doesn't seem strong enough to do that, but as I said I really liked her.
Overall a great read. I love the darkness of the Point. I love the characters who still are criminals, but also good guys. I love these stories

“Are you speaking from experience?” If she ever took her clothes off for money, entire countries would end up broke.
“No. Just from what I heard when they were in my chair and then from watching how quickly my sister got sucked into it all. There is no escape once the Point has you.”
She leaned her head back on the couch and shifted her eyes up to the ceiling. I thought I saw a sheen of moisture dance across the navy-colored surface but then she blinked and it was gone.
“It sucks,” I said. She tilted her head to look at me. “The way everything went down with your sister, that sucks. But you tried to help her, tried to save her, and that’s what you should focus on.”
She made a noise low in her throat and shoved up off the couch. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked down at me with eyes that went flinty hard. “It wasn’t enough. What time do you want to head out tomorrow?”
The quick change in conversation forced me to switch gears. “I have to work in the morning, so when I get back.”
“Are you actually going to come back after your shift tomorrow?”
So my avoidance tactics hadn’t gone unnoticed. “Yes. I’ll try and be here before five.
You really do need some clothes that fit.” Brysen had run a few things up after we had been camped out for a few days and they fit slightly better, but no girl alive seemed to have those ridiculously long legs or the same kind of curves Reeve was working on up top. Brysen’s stuff covered her up more than my teenaged neighbor’s, but not enough that I didn’t get an eyeful when I looked at her.
She linked her fingers together and lifted her arms up over her head in a way that pulled the hem of her tank top up over the indent of her belly button and lifted the edge of her tiny shorts so high I didn’t have to use much imagination to envision what all the secret, soft parts of her looked like. Like I needed any more incentive to keep thinking about her and sex when my mind and attention should be anywhere else.
“I can cover it all up, it’s not going to change the fact that you want me and are angry about it.”
She twirled on her foot and flounced back up the stairs. If there had been a single door in
the loft I knew she would have slammed it to make her point.
